 The Word

August 2010

A vibrant, growing, joy-filled fellowship of seekers who are encountering the living Christ,

being transformed by His Spirit, and sharing His love with others.

Love Makes the World Go Around

It has been said, “Love makes the world go around.” Some say, “Love is the most powerful force in the universe.” This does not sound too scientific to me. I never studied love as a kinetic energy. Sounds like a bunch of romantic nonsense. The gravitational pull of the stars and planets is the true force behind the motion of the universe. Electromagnetic fields allow the transference of charged particles from positive to negative polls. Inertia keeps the object at rest if resting and moving if in motion. Gravity and attraction have more to do with the world going around than anything else. Yet I wonder.
What was the force behind the gravity? What is the force behind the attraction? What makes opposites attract? What is the energy behind it all? Sometimes it seems these scientific forces are not enough. How can they work in harmony and create a celestial dance in space?
Then I read in Genesis 1:1 it states, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” And when I read I John 4:16 it states, “God is love.” Now I understand. God brings order out of chaos and creates. God creates out of God’s love for us. God gives us the gravity of love and the attraction to love others. God moves us from a state of rest into the dance of life. Even though we may become polarized we still need each other. Love is the force we need behind us. Science may not teach us that love moves the universe and it may not be a kinetic energy, but it moves my world and I believe it moves yours. Love does make the world go around.

Dinner & Dialog Begins
Summer is not completely over, but believe it or not, it is time to sign up for the fall session of Dinner & Dialog. The fall session runs from September through December. We try to have groups of four couples with each couple hosting for one time during the four month period. You may know of someone who is not here and would like to join up. If so, please call Helen or Don Reinhardt @585-1570 or the church office, or if you have any questions call. Sign up sheets should be in the church bulletins during the month of August. The purpose of these get-togethers is to get better acquainted with your fellow church members over a meal whether it be breakfast, brunch, lunch or dinner. Please join us.

Disciple Bible Study Returning
We will have a sign-up meeting for “Disciple II: Into the Word, Into the World” in early September. If you have taken the first Disciple Bible Study course, no matter when or where it was, you are welcome to sign up for Disciple II. This 32-week class will focus on Genesis, Exodus, Luke, and Acts. It will also, no doubt, include yummy snacks! Watch the bulletin and the September newsletter for a specific day and time for the sign-up meeting.

Dinner with Friends & Food Pantry Returning
After a month off, for a well deserved rest, the Food Pantry and Dinner with Friends will continue. The Dinner with Friends will be every Friday night at 5:30
The Food Pantry will be every first & third Thursday of the month at 11:00am-1:00pm

Shower Singers Get Flowing Again
Can you breathe? Can you make sounds with your mouth? If you answered yes to both of these questions, then you are qualified to join the Shower Singers. No musical training or skill is necessary, but a love of singing helps. We will get started again on Wednesday, August 4, at 7 p.m., and we will continue to meet every Wednesday in August.

Every Sunday, we will share one song at the 9:30 worship service on Sunday that we sang the previous Wednesday. We won’t make you appear on screen or wear a robe. You don’t even have to sit apart from your family for the whole service.
You don’t have to read music or sing parts to join us. But, if you like using your windpipes as much as you like using your shower pipes, then this is the group for you.

 National Night Out
To every member of The First United Methodist Church, we invite you to join us on the night of August 3rd, Mission’s annual National Night Out. It is a chance to expand our congregation as well as have a great time. This year our booth will include such things as face painting for children and cotton candy…as well as distributing buttons and pamphlets with information about FUMC. We invite all of you to come and join us for a great time. If you are interested in volunteering please contact Maria Alas at the church office. We hope to see you all there.
